DR. VANDANA SHIVA: How Biodiversity can save dirt and prevent world hunger. The mysterious death of soils and farmer suicides in southern India caught the attention of Dr. Vandana Shiva who was raised in a forest, and trained as a physicist. Discovering what the corporate-supplied hybrid seeds and chemical farming had done to the soil, she organized a seed bank which preserves native agricultural seed stocks. The seed bank makes them available to farmers who are reviving traditional methods of growing crops that also build up the dirt. She went on to create the Navdanaya Movement in which half a million Indian farmers are re-discovering and creating an agricultural system that holds promise for the whole world. Shiva’s books and lectures have inspired millions of people around the world to seek sustainable solutions for dirt and humans. Her latest book is “Soil Not Oil.” |
